【Haiku by atomic bomb victims 】
On August 6, the ten year old girl Gyotoku Isako and her family were exposed to the atomic bomb and her younger brother Masanobu, who was seven years old, died.
Don’t chirp, cicadas
It makes me remember
Masanobu
I can’t forget
my little brother’s
pure white shirt
Isako
Then her younger sister Hiroko, who was four years old, died.
Dear Hiroko
come play again with me
your big sister
Isako
Then her older brother and her father died, and finally Isako herself, after writing the poems above, passed away too.
Isako’s mother, the only one of the family who survived, recorded these poems.
Isako must have suffered horrendous burns. Enduring unimaginable pain, each time one of her family died, she wrote a poem. And the poem was her prayer.
